Short Format Rule Changes

For a team to succeed in
League, at least one of the members must master Short Format games, such as Dogfights and
Blitzes. These matches are unlike anything else in Planets because they end quickly and the maps are small. Overcoming these odds can earn points for a League team.
-
Dogfights
cram eight players onto a very small map. These combats are intense, chaotic, and a rush of excitement. You are often attacked from every angle so each turn is a struggle to stay alive.
-
A
Blitz
competition places 2 players (or two teams of 2 players) on a small map for a fast-paced head-to-head competition. Quick economic development and superior ship-to-ship tactics carry commanders to the top. Since only 2-4 empires are involved, Turns run as fast as players hit the "End Turn" button.
The game of Planets tends to balance out when it is played on larger maps and with all 11 races, but custom contests which drastically reduce these particulars often imbalance gameplay; for example, some races are stronger in the early turns, while some races take longer to develop. In an attempt to level the playing field for all races, League play utilizes the following modifications to the normal ruleset:
Short Format Rules
-
Lizards: Mining bonus reduced to 150%. Only one HISSer per planet allowed.
-
Bird Men: Tax bonus increased to 150%.
-
Privateers: Ground Attack improved to 5:1.
-
Cyborg: Assimilation Rate increased to 3 native clans per turn. 20% native tax limit removed. Chunnel Stabilization Field enabled. (see notes below)
-
Evil Empire : Free fighters per turn increased to 15.
Note on Short Format Chunneling: The Chunnel Stabilization Field generates from the player's homeworld and covers the entire map. This is equivalent to stargate technology where the net effect is a minimal chunnel distance of 1 LY and Cyborg ships are able to chunnel while at warp.
