This page discusses the effects of damage on weapons (planets, starbases and starships - count and tech) and engines (starships only). NOTE: It has been superseded by other documentation and is considered outdated.
When a starship is damaged, the maximum warp speed at which the starship can move is reduced. The maximum speed with of a starship with various amounts of damage is shown in the following table.
Damage Lizards Others 0-19% 9 9 20-29% 9 8 30-39% 9 7 40-49% 9 6 50-59% 9 5 60-69% 9 4 70-79% 8 3 80-89% 7 2 90-99% 6 1 100-109% 5 1 Destroyed 110-119% 4 1 Destroyed 120-129% 3 1 Destroyed 130-139% 2 1 Destroyed 140-149% 1 1 Destroyed 150% 0 1 Destroyed 151% or more Destroyed Destroyed
Note 1: Lizard starships that receive 100% damage or more while in orbit around a planet, will be destroyed after the combat phase completes. If the planet receives 100% damage or more, the Lizards will take the planet, even though the ship is destroyed.
After a starship has been damaged, it is possible that some of the weapons (beams, torpedo tubes or fighter bays) in it will no longer be functional. The table below lists the maximum number of each type of weapon that a starship will have functional at a given level of damage. Racial weapon bonuses (e.g. Federation Crew bonus to Fighter Bays) and Fleet weapon bonuses (e.g. Cloaked Fighter Bays on Red Wind Storm-Carrier) are added to the value in the table.

Starbases that survive combat without shields may absorb some of a planet's damage. This will remove starbase Defense Points and reduce starbase Tech Levels permanently. The starbase Repair mission will repair battle damage gradually over several turns, but will never restore lost Tech or Defense. Starbase damage accumulates over multiple battles, but its only in-game effect is to eliminate the base if damage ever reaches 100%.
Planets always start each combat with no damage. If a planet is damaged during combat, it will lose defense posts in proportion to the damage it received. As an example, if a planet has 65 defense posts and receives 43% damage in a combat, the number of defense posts will be decreased by 27. As a result of this the number of planetary beams and fighters may be decreased, and the type of beam used may become less powerful.
In addition, for each planetary fighter destroyed, one defense post is lost. It should be noted that planetary fighters are lost only after all starbase fighters have been destroyed.
