Black Holes are an optional game feature. They will not appear in all games.
Black Holes are stars that have collapsed to the point where their density is so massive, that not even light can escape their gravitational pull.
Black Holes have a destructive core
that instantly destroys any starship that moves/hyperjumps/chunnels through it. They also cause nearby minefields and ion storms to gravitate towards them.
Surrounded by a core is the influencing ergosphere
, comprised of a set of 9 bands
that become progressively stronger as the distance to the core decreases. The maximum safe warp factor varies inversely with band strength (ships moving faster than this will be instantly sucked in). Ergospheres also bend hyperjump paths.
